Project: Blogging For Beer (Beers not Bears)

Hello there! I'm Laura Boylan, and this is my new blog. This is by no means my first blog (first one was ten years ago on diaryland) but this one is going to be different, I swear. ;-) I have a personal blog, for trivial details of my life and for babbling about my favorite media. Though those things may come up here, but my primary goal here is going to be to talk critically and seriously about topics that interest me. I expect there to be media analysis, culture, society, politics, et cetera. I am going to post at least once a week, for the cause of Beer.

This blog is part of a project being run by my friend Nelson. Every week, each participant has to post to their blog, or they owe the beer fund five dollars. Roughly once a month we go out for drinks, subsidized by the beer fund. I don't really like much beer, but hopefully I can drink lambic or cider or something else sweet. I have quite the sweet tooth. :-)

So, a little about myself. I live in Boston, and plan to stay there for the foreseeable future. I graduated from MIT with a degree in Comparative Media Studies. I'm currently job hunting, and hoping to get an offer this week from a company that does online educational content. Fingers crossed!

While at MIT I worked at the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab making video games and at Project New Media Literacies making online educational activities about new media skills.

I'm also a part of fan culture. I attend conventions, I read fanfic, I watch vids, I talk to other fans. I just wrote my first real fanfic for Yuletide, and I'm about to make my first (released) fan video for Festivids.

I also write, run, and play theatre-style Live Action Roleplaying games, primarily with the MIT Assassins' Guild and Intercon. I'm on the board for New England Interactive Literature, which runs Intercon.

I'd tell you more, but I'm on a Bolt Bus and can't type anymore. Happy Almost New Year!
